Vocabulary
Research tells us that there is a significant link between a reader’s vocabulary and their level of reading comprehension. To the non-educator, this is just common sense—a reader will surely understand what he reads if he knows what the words mean. To the educator, vocabulary instruction should be a regular part of our curriculum. There are many ways teachers in all content areas can effectively teach vocabulary.
1. Build a word-rich environment.
2. Encourage students to learn new words on their own.
3. Model good word-learning behavior.
4. Match vocabulary assessment with the goal of instruction.
